Golden Globes and Sex

As the Golden Globe nominations are upon us, I am thinking over the movies of this past year. There are two movies that will most likely receive nominations-"There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men". I have seen neither of these films but I can tell you from what I have seen and read that these films are filled with violence. I have nothing against violence on screen. I think that, as I said previously, that "The Departed" deserved the best picture Oscar last year. It was extremely violent and sometimes hard to watch. What I do have a problem with is this country's prudish disdain for nudity and sexual content. The MPAA has decided for us that we can handle violence but we can't handle a naked woman/man or a couple having sex. We live in a country where teen pregnancy is prevalent, AIDS is an epidemic, and abortion is a hot topic among politicians running for office. Why is that? I believe that if we accepted ourselves in our purest form, taught our children to be responsible when it comes to sex, and put a little nudity in film, we would be better off as a society. Why, you ask? Because when an adult tells a teenager something is okay, it loses its appeal. Why do you think there is such an abundance of violence in films today? Maybe because we are living during a time of war that most people are starting to disagree with and it doesn't look like its going to end anytime soon. As I step down from my soapbox, I say that my vote for best film of the year award goes to "Knocked Up". It was the sleeper hit of the summer and one of the funniest films I have seen in a long time. It was smart and sweet. It didn't patronize its audience with brainless humor. I won't hold my breath, but here's to "Knocked Up" getting a nomination.
